Vito.

In noble hops alone there are 3 or 4 varieties which are very different. Saaz is not similar to Tettnanger. East Kent Goldings is not similar to either. Neither is Spalt. And those are just the noble hops. There's 4 right there.
Cascade is different from all of these so far. Sorachi Ace has a strong lemon character and is unique. Nelson Sauvin has a strong bazga character and is unique. OLD used El Dorado recently and it has a water melon character. Also unique. And that's just scratching the surface. It's true that you can group a lot of them as similar. Amarillo and Centennial can be grouped with Cascade, along with Citra. But they also taste a bit different. To say there are only really 3 or 4 that are strongly different is to show that you don't actually know from experience.
You *can* partially group hops by parentage. Northern Brewer has spawned many hops, including Aurora, Challenger and Northdown. And those hops all display some similarities. So, there's no use in using them in ways where you might think you'll get a wildly different beer from each of them. But sometimes family traits don't carry through so much. Cascade is related to Fuggle and they're not very similar, for instance.
